AGARTALA, June 7 Two persons including a BSF jawan died while nine local residents were injured when BSF jawans allegedly opened fire indiscriminately at Dakshin Ramnagar, close to capital town here last night.
The two deceased persons were identified as Sandip Kumar, a BSF jawan and Ismail Miah, an elderly person of the area. However, the condition of the injured persons, who were shifted to GBP Hospital after the incident, is stated to be critical.
As the mercury was up, local residents were relaxing near a pond at Dakshin Ramnagar, a thickly populated village, while a few persons were in the water.
It was around 8.45 pm, two BSF jawans engaged in patrolling appeared at the pond and asked them why they were here. The villagers readily replied We are here to cool off leading to a quarrel.
Suddenly, one of the jawans lost his control and opened fire resulting in one person Ismail Miah dying on the spot while nine others were injured. It is alleged that BSF jawan Sandip Kumar was lynched by the mob.
On receiving the information, senior police officers including Inspector General (Law and Order) Anurag rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Taking a serious note of the development, the State Government on Saturday announced a magisterial inquiry into the incident last night, officials said.
District Magistrate West Tripura district, Abhishek Singh, who is conducting the magisterial inquiry, said the investigation has started from today itself. Stern action would be taken if any body is found guilty. No one would be spared, Singh told reporters.
Tension is prevailing in the area and security was beefed up with the deployment of Tripura State Rifles (TSR). The security personnel were seen patrolling the area.
PTI adds: The BSF personnel were attacked by villagers while they were chasing smugglers during a routine patrol last night prompting them to open fire in self defence at South Ramnagar, BSF DIG BS Rawat said.
The DIG said the villagers attacked the security men with lathis. The BSF initially fired in the air to disperse the mob and then opened fire in self defence in which the villager, Ismail Mia, was killed and nine others were injured.
BSF jawan Sandeep Kumar was then lynched by villagers, he said, adding a BSF man was also injured.
