2 held for running gambling bouts

By Correspondent

JORABAT, Sept 19 - Sonapur police today arrested two persons Bidhan Rai and Ainul Hoque for running gambling bouts in full public view at a Meena Bazar currently on in the old market area just a few metres away from the Sonapur Police Station.

The arrest was made after a section of concerned residents of Dimoria highlighted the issue on Facebook (social media). The social media also criticised Tarun Kr Chiring, the officer-incharge of Sonapur Police Station for allowing the illegal activity under his jurisdiction.

According to the locals, the gambling was running for the last four days. What made it more disheartening was the use of the national emblem and the national flag at the entrance to the Meena Bazar as a camouflage for running gambling bouts.

The issue is very disheartening. It is an issue of showing disrespect to our national emblem and national flag. The spot of the gambling being just a few metres from the Sonapur Police Station, the organisers seemed to have managed the police, a local resident said.

The inaction of Sonapur police irked a former student leader, Mousam Baishya who, along with a few of youths of Dimoria filed an FIR under the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971 for disrespecting the national flag and emblem.

The FIR also mentioned the inaction of the OC of Sonapur PS to curb the illegal activity under his jurisdiction.

Under pressure from different quarters, Sonapur police finally registered a case on its own (case no. 295/18) under Section 14 of the Assam Gambling & Betting Act. The police also raided the gambling venue and seized some equipment used in the gambling bouts.
