Guwahati, Feb 1: PWD Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today inaugurated two foot overbridges on GS Road in the city – one near Walford point and the other near Post Office.
The bridges were completed months before the scheduled time, Sarma said.
The PWD is constructing nine such bridges in the city. “We will inaugurate two more on February 10. The others will be completed by April,” a PWD official said.
The special features of the foot overbridges include lifts, staircases and elevators. CCTV cameras have been also installed for security of people. The bridges were built at a cost of Rs 11 crore each.
The PWD official said the initial plan to convert the existing foot overbridge at Ulubari into a new bridge with elevators has been shelved. “The old structure is dilapidated. We will have to construct it afresh, so it might take some time,” the official said.
According to Minister Sarma, the flyover at Super Market will be completed by Bohag Bihu and the alternative road to Kamakhya will also be opened for public soon.
The foundation stone for the flyover at Sharabhhati will be laid in a few days’ time.
