BARPETA, Sept 10 - Two school children died on the spot while 19 others were injured when the vehicle they were travelling in to school, skidded off the road at Bengjuli in Barpeta district this morning.
Two police personnel, including the officer in-charge of Bhawanipur Out Post, were also injured as the irate public attacked them.
The children, numbering 21, were going in a bus from some villages under Paka and Bhawanipur Mouza to the Sarbajanin Jatiya Vidyalay at Taltal near Pathshala in Barpeta district. The driver of the vehicle lost control at Bengjuli and skidded of the road around 8.30 am. Local people were able to rescue 19 of them, while Rakibul Islam of Class V and Rahul Ahmed of Class III, died on the spot. The injured children were hospitalised.
The irate mob set the vehicle ablaze to vent their anger and attacked the police party who tried to prevent them from burning the vehicle.
The two policemen, including the officer in-charge of Bhawanipur Out Post Gobinda Deka, were also hospitalised.
