2 buried alive while cutting hill �illegally�

GUWAHATI, April 5 - Two workers were buried alive while they were cutting a trench into a hill inside the campus of Icon English School at Chapaidung under Dispur revenue circle this morning.

Around eight workers were working at the site at that time when earth from the hill slid down and buried two of them at around 9 am. The victims were identified as Roisuddin Ali and Saidul Ali, both from Khotabagra in Kokrajhar district.

Locals said the authorities of the Icon English School initially tried to hush up the matter and made attempts to retrieve the bodies without informing the administration. However, after they failed, they were forced to intimate the authorities.

Police and officials of the civil administration rushed to the area and launched a rescue operation to retrieve the bodies. The circle officer of Dispur revenue circle and the forest department have lodged separate FIRs against the school authorities at Panikhaiti police outpost.

Kamrup metro deputy commissioner Dr M Angamuthu said the cutting of trench has been found to be illegal and it was carried out without permission and safety measures. The DC has also ordered the circle officer of Dispur revenue circle for an immediate enquiry into the incident.

Meanwhile, the district administration has announced Rs 4 lakh each as ex gratia to the landslide victim�s families.
