2 bodies recovered from Geluwa river; driver still missing

DHEMAJI, July 3 - The NDRF, SDRF and Dhemaji Police, who are conducting a joint search operation, recovered the ominous i-10 Hyundai car with two bodies therein from Geluwa river bed this morning.

However, they are yet to trace the missing car driver Manuranjan Mahatu alias Sailen (38) till Friday evening.

The joint team has suspended operation in the evening, but it is rescheduled to resume operation from tomorrow morning.

The NDRF and SDRF got an input from senior geologist Dr Bijoy Krishna Chetia, who indicated four pin-points through Google Earth analysis, which marked as possible tools of the search operation.

The deceased have been identified as Tankeswar Kalita (55) and his young daughter Pallavi (16).

Some local people, who noticed the incident on Thursday, had saved deceased Kalita�s wife Sarumai Kalita (40) with their daughter Babita Kalita (22) from drowning in the river.

The incident took place when the car went skidded off the National Highway-15 at Sissiborgaon in Dhemaji district and plunged into Geluwa river.

Kalita and his family members were on their way to Silapathar in the district to attend a wedding ceremony.

Police said that Tankeswar Kalita (55) was a havildar of 13th APBn, posted at Lilabari in Lakhimpur district.

Locals say that frequent road accidents take place at Geluwa curve-point along the highway. They blame the highway authority for the accidents, alleging that the highway authority and Dhemaji district administration, despite repeated appeals, have not taken up necessary measures in this regard.

The local have witnessed more than 20 motor accidents at Geluwa curve-point along the highway and at least seven people have lost their lives there during the last couple of years.
