2 Asha workers among four held for trading baby

GUWAHATI, Aug 2 - Four persons, including two ASHA workers have been arrested by police on charges of selling a six-month-old baby.

ADCP (West) Suprativ Lal Baruah said the arrested buyer couple, Ram Pradhan and Dipali Pradhan, hail from Noonmati. They had bought the baby for Rs 80,000.

�The baby was sold by its father Rafiqul Islam. On July 10 the case was registered following a complaint by the mother, Mofida Khatun,� the police official said.

The baby was recovered from Pradhan�s residence at Noonmati. Following directions of the court, it was handed over to the mother.

Two ASHA workers who acted as middlemen � Purnima Newar of Fatasil Ambari and Rabina Begum of Santipur � were also arrested.

A case has been registered under sections 498 (A), 328, 363 and 370 of the IPC. The accused father of the baby is absconding and a hunt is on to nab him.
