19 underperforming Members shown door

GUWAHATI, June 21 - In a major development, the State Government has shown the door to as many as 19 Members of the Foreigners Tribunals (FTs) for their underperformance during the last two years.

Further, the home department has also issued strict warning to another 15 Members of the FTs asking them to improve their efficacy by accelerating the rate of disposal of cases.

In pursuance of the approval conveyed by the Ministry of Home Affairs, the State Government has released the list of 81 Members who could retain their position on June 20. The new Members will take charge from June 23.

The Members of the tribunals whose services were discontinued owing to their unsatisfactory performance are mostly from districts like Dhubri, Goalpara, Barpeta and Nagaon.

The home department, time and again, had cautioned the Members to improve their efficacy and had even formed screening committees both at the State and the district levels to screen judgements where the person in question was declared �not foreigners� contrary to the submissions of the police.

More than 40,000 orders, where the accused were eventually declared as �not foreigners� , were passed in the span of last two years or so by the tribunals.

The screening committees, meanwhile, has challenged nearly 50 cases for their review in the Gauhati High Court.

Among those who were denied extension for their unsatisfactory performance are Kartik Roy (Dhubri), Navanita Baruah (Goalpara 2), Dilip Kumar Barman (Goalpara 6), Bhaba Kanta Hazarika (Goalpara 7), Dwijen Chandra Dutta (Barpeta 5), Kamal Uddin Ahmed Choudhury (Barpeta 6), Nilay Kanti Ghose (Barpeta 7), Navanita Mitra (Barpeta 10), Surajit Chakrabarty (Nalbari 2), Ashim Kumar Baruah (Kamrup 3), Gity Kakati Das (Kamrup 4), Arup Kumar Sarma (Nagaon 4), Mamoni Rajkumari (Nagaon 6), Subrata Bhuyan (Nagaon 8), Indrani Bordoloi (Lakhimpur 2), Dinesh Choudhuri (Kamrup Metro 3), Haresh Chandra Sarma (Kamrup Metro 4) and Babita Das (Mangaldai 4).
