17 identified, 12 held in molestation case

GUWAHATI, July 18 � The investigation officer of the Bhangagarh Police Station has collected the video footage from the private TV channels on the July 9 GS Road incident. In all, 17 persons have been identified as involved in this case and 12 of them have been arrested so far. This was disclosed by Minister Rockybul Hussain in a statement made in the State Assembly here today.

A case (No 191/12 under sections 143/341/323/294/354/379 of the IPC) has been registered with the Bhangagarh Police Station in this connection. Of the rest five persons involved in the incident, three are absconding.

For speedy investigation into the incident, a special investigation team has been formed under the supervision of the Criminal Investigation Department and it is being led by the Superintendent of the City Operation Unit.

Second Officer of the Dispur Police Station Sub-Inspector Sobhan Barua has been placed under suspension for his dereliction of duty. The Chief Minister has by this time announced a one-man enquiry commission to be headed by Additional Chief Secretary to go into the matter, the Minister said.

To prevent recurrence of such incidents and to expedite investigations into such incidents, seven units have been set up by the city police including also the women police in each of the units, he said.

The Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup (Metro) has cancelled the licence of the Mint Bar.

To prevent recurrence of such incidents administrative measures like fixing of the time schedule of the bars and ensuring strict adherence to that, installation of CCTV camera and observation of the minimum age of the customers, intensifying police patrolling, raising the number of observation units of the police in special areas, etc. steps have been taken up.

Two PSOs have been provided to the victim girl and the Government is also taking steps to rehabilitate her. The Government is determined to punish all the culprits involved in the incident, the Minister said.
