16th Asam Mahotsav at Jorhat from Dec 29

JORHAT, Dec 23 - Staging of bhaona in Mising language by a group from Majuli island, children staging bhaona (Raja Harichandra), a children fashion show on traditional dresses, drawing competition, stalls of traditional food items of different ethnic groups of Assam, a cooking competition, a photography contest, are some of the extra highlights of the 16th edition of Asam Mahotsav to be held at the Jorhat District Sports Association Ground from December 29 to January 12.

Addressing media persons here today, the president of the organising committee of Intandem, Jorhat, a voluntary organisation, Dilip Kumar Bordoloi said that over 140 stalls will be put up at the mahotsav and States from outside the North-east will participate.

Bordoloi said that the stalls will be on traditional handicraft items, textiles, jewellery, decorative items, electronics goods among others. He said that traders from Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, are scheduled to put up stalls in the fair.

Bordoloi further stated that internationally acclaimed flutist Prabhat Sarmah will inaugurate the fair at 3 pm on December 29. During the inaugural function several imminent persons will be felicitated for their contributions towards the society.

Sahitya Akademi award winner Santanu Tamuli, well-known cultural artiste Tilmizur Rahman, sports organiser and sportsman Nripen Sabhapandit will also be felicitated on the occasion.
