16 test positive in Barak Valley

SILCHAR, May 28 - In another major escalation of COVID-19 positive cases, as many as 16 persons have been detected with the virus from Barak Valley including one case from Dima Hasao district on Thursday.

While a tweet by State Health Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma at 2:50 pm informed that seven cases have been reported from Cachar together with two each at Karimganj and Hailakandi and one case from Dima Hasao district, another tweet at 6:20 pm informed that four more cases have been found positive from Cachar.

It may be mentioned here that with the release of two COVID-19 affected patients on Wednesday, 63 patients are undergoing treatment at the COVID-19 ward of Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH). Sources in the District Health department, Cachar informed that all the fresh detected cases have travel histories to places like Mumbai, Bihar, Chennai, Gujarat etc., and they were kept in the quarantine centres here. None of the positive cases reached here by flight, officials of the Health department claimed.

Dr Bhaskar Gupta, Vice Principal of SMCH informed mediapersons that if need arises, the Department of Surgery, which is now a containment zone at the hospital shall be annexed with the existing COVID-19 ward.

On the other hand, District Media Expert Suman Choudhury informed that Deputy Commissioner Keerthi Jalli, IAS visited SM Dev Civil Hospital along with Urban Health Centre at Mela Road and Palanghat Model Hospital to take stock of the arrangements therein. The Deputy Commissioner had urged the staff of Civil Hospital to work as a cohesive unit to fight out the pandemic.
