150 yrs of Nagaon Govt Boys� HS School

NAGAON, Nov 22 � The Nagaon Government Boys� HS School was established on November 17 in 1865. This year the school has entered the 150 years of its existence. To celebrate the 150 years of the establishment of the school, a three-day inaugural function started on Friday.

The function started with the hoisting of the school flag by former student and Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain to the accompaniment of sankhadhwani presented by former student Pulakananda Koushik. In his address, Hussain recalled the contributions of teachers, students and employees to the growth of this prestigious institution. At the same time, 150 ex-students, ex-teachers and ex-employees also hoisted 150 flags. Students presented the school song during the hoisting of the flag.

Former student and former principal Bimal Chandra Bora initiated the smriti tarpan. The exhibition arranged on the occasion was declared open by Nagaon MLA Dr Durlav Chamua.

Ex-student and noted actor Dinesh Das flagged off the cultural procession which wended through the main thoroughfares of the town.

Former students also took part in the �Guru-Shishyar Mahamilan� programme which was inaugurated by ex-student and Nagaon MP Rajen Gohain. Attending the function, former student and retired principal Alimuz Zaman said that students took their teachers to an exalted level. He cited the example of Socrates and Plato.

The function was conducted by former student and retired principal Bimal Chandra Bora where a number of former pupils recalled their student days.

A seminar on the future of education of Assam in the context of the changing scenario of global education was also arranged. Former student and JNU professor Binod Khaderia inaugurated the seminar. Dr Arup Mishra of the Assam Engineering College was another resource person. Educationist Dr K Bhuyan conducted the programme.

The lighting of 150 lights on the school premises was initiated by principal Dipika Laskar. A cultural function was also held.

An open session was held on November 18 which was declared open by the VC of the Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev Vishwavidyalaya, Dr KK Kakati. In his address, the VC said: �We must encourage the educational institutions in the vernacular medium. Guardians should also take care of their children properly instead of putting the stress on marks in different examinations alone.� He called for a seminar to discuss the deterioration of the present education scene, mainly in the vernacular medium.

Minister Rockybul Hussain chaired the open session. MLA Dr Durlav Chamua also spoke a few words in the session.

Principal Dipika Laskar stated the significance of the function. A souvenir published to mark the occasion and the school magazine were formally released by minister Hussain. VC Dr Kakati released another publication, Rumanthan.

On November 19, a cultural function was held in which invited artistes performed.
