1,348 pigs die in Mizoram

AIZAWL, April 21 - At least 1,348 pigs and piglets have died in Mizoram during the last few weeks due to the outbreak of Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) and Classical Swine Fever (CSF), an official said.

The figure was based on the latest weekly reports received from the eight districts of the State till Thursday, State Animal Husbandry and Veterinary department�s Joint Director (Livestock Health) Dr Hmarkunga said here yesterday.

He said that 2,613 pigs and piglets had so far been infected with the PRRS and Swine Fever. 81 villages had also been affected by the two diseases. As there was no vaccine for the viral diseases, drugs to prevent secondary bacterial infections were administered to the sick swines, he added. � PTI
