SILCHAR, April 27 - Police arrested five notorious criminals red-handed while they attempted to run away after snatching money from an elderly person outside an ATM counter at Tulagram in Nutun Bazar area under Sonai constituency today.
A cash amount of Rs 20,000 and 40 ATM cards were recovered from their possession.
According to police, Saharul Islam, the prime accused in the case shadowed the elderly person after he came out of the ATM at Nutun Bazar area. Soon, the victim informed the police and the accused was caught red-handed.
Later, his accomplices, including Raju Uddin Laskar, Hilal Ahmed, Riyabul Hussain Laskar and Ajmol Ali Laskar, all residents of Ujantarapur under Lakhipur constituency, were trapped and arrested.
Cachar SP Rakesh Roushan informed that the arrested persons were involved in many incidents of snatching and cheating and police is interrogating them for further clues.
In yet another incident, police conducted raids in several shops at Naga Patty area and arrested eight persons allegedly involved in Tir and gambling from Silchar. DSP (Hq) AJ Baruah led the police team during the raid.
