12 shops gutted at Goalpara market

GOALPARA, April 24 � At least 12 shops were completely destroyed when a devastating fire broke out at Goalpara new market around on 10.45 pm yesterday.

A line of shops under the Goalpara Municipal Corporation was completely destroyed in the blaze which was suspected to have been originated from an electrical short-circuit.

Preetom Saikia, Deputy Commissioner along with other officials rushed to the spot and supervised the entire situation.

Additional fire tenders have to be called from as far away places as Bongaigaon, Abhayapuri, Dudhnoi and Lakhipur to control the razing inferno. Fire deparment officials said the flames were doused after around 7 hours at 7 am today.

Meanwhile, the loss has been estimated at around Rs 30 lakh, according to police sources.
