12-hour Lakhimpur & Dhemaji dist bandh today in protest against Doleys killing

By ANN Service

JONAI, June 26 - In the backdrop of Congress leader Hiranya Doleys murder on Saturday night by unidentified miscreants, the Asom Pradesh Youth Congress has proposed a 12-hour Dhemaji and Lakhimpur district bandh on Tuesday in protest against the cold-blooded killing at Jonai, besides Lakhimpur businessman Guljar Khan, who too was shot dead by unidentified miscreants on June 21 last.

In the meantime, the leader of the Opposition in the State Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia accompanied by Assam Pardesh Youth Congress president Hiranya Bhuyan, Dhemaji DCC president Rishav Gogoi, APCC general secretary Abani Baruah and other Congress leaders rushed to Dekapam today and met the family members of Hiranya Doley.

Saikia, who subsequently addressed a press meet at Hotel Padma Palace at Silapathar town, sharply condemned the killing of Hiranya Doley and urged the State Government to institute a high-level probe to unearth the facts behind the killing. Claiming that Doley was a popular social activist, Saikia said that the dastardly killing of such a person by miscreants would never be tolerated by the people.

Saikia presumed that the deceaseds son, Santosh Doley, who is an active youth Congress member, was instrumental in blowing the lid off many irregularities in the Government departments through RTI, following which he often received threatening calls from various quarters, as disclosed by Doleys family members, which may perhaps be the cause behind the barbaric killing of his father in order to demoralise him.

However, Saikia did not utter the name of any insurgent group suspected to be involved with the incident, rather he urged the Sarbananda Sonowal-led State Government machinery to nab the culprits at the earliest possible and award them exemplary punishment. He also demanded the Government to provide a job to the deceaseds dependent on compassionate ground.

Meanwhile, Dhemaji district police picked up three persons, including Ranjana Pait Doley of Jonai, Robin Kumbang and Bipul Doley of Dekapam for interrogation. Police, however, refrained from disclosing anything further.

In Silapathar: Close on the heels of the dastardly killings, the Indian Youth Congress and Lakhimpur Lok Sabha Committee in association with Jonai Youth Congress Committee too have called a 12-hour Lakhimpur-Dhemaji district bandh on June 27, adds our Correspondent.
