12 get lifer in ex-Cong MLA�s murder

AGARTALA, April 30 - Twelve accused persons were sentenced to life term rigorous imprisonment after they were found guilty in the sensational former Congress MLA Parimal Saha murder case.

Addl Sessions Judge SB Datta on Saturday also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on each convicted person failing which they will have to spend another one year in jail.

The 12 convicted persons included Shasti Chakravorty, Uttam Saha, Mrinal Sengupta, Pradul Sengupta, Bijay Kumar Das, Kajal Roy, Abhoy Kanti Bhusan, Chinmoy Ghosh, Hiranmoy Ghosh, Sukhendu Bikash Das, Babul Das and Sajal Kumar Sarkar. They were charged under sections 147 (punishment for rioting), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 149 (unlawful assembly), 120 (b) (criminal conspiracy), 307 (attempt to murder), 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons) and 302 (murder) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and under section 3 of Explosive Substances Act.

The then Congress MLA Parimal Saha was brutally killed by unknown assailants on the Agartala-Bishalgarh road at Bishalgarh on April 7, 1983 during Block Advisory Committee (BAC) elections.

The case was investigated by the State police and charge-sheet was submitted before the Court on April 29, 1983 against 25 persons to pave the way for trial. While seven accused persons � Gulzar Harizan, Kali Harizan, Dodul Sengupta alias Duldul, Ajit Kumar Dey, Biswajit Saha alias Bishu, Ranjit Dasgupta and Sadhan Karmakar passed away during the trial, another accused person Mofiz Miah is absconding.
