11 held for protest against cow smuggling

GOLAKGANJ, Sept 22 - The Dhubri police on Monday arrested 11 people who were part of a protest demonstration against cow smuggling on Sunday. The arrest of the protesters a day later, has invited widespread criticism from different sections of the society.

It may be mentioned here that under the nose of the police, cattle smugglers are using Dhubri as a transit route.

On Sunday, hundreds of people gheraoed the Golakganj police station in protest against the alleged assault on a pregnant woman and the police department�s failure to curb cattle smuggling. Though the police didn�t act on Sunday, on Monday they arrested 11 protesters on different charges.

Meanwhile, condemning the police action, the people of the area said, �The police and the cattle smugglers have a nexus. The police is always soft on the smugglers.� They slammed the police action and urged the police to release the arrested persons at the earliest . The people also threatened to agitate if they were not released.

Meanwhile, Dhubri district unit of the Bajrang Dal today called a12-hour district strike in protest against the unabated cattle smuggling to Bangladesh through Dhubri border in connivance with the police and arrest of the eleven persons. All the shops, markets, financial institutions, banks in Golakganj area were closed during the bandh and the bandh passed of peacefully without any untoward incident.

Our Gauripur correspondent adds: It may be mentioned here that a section of leading citizens of Golakganj including Premsukh Sethia, an aspirant for the 25 Golakganj LAC seat of the BJP were invited by the Golakganj police in order to discuss and find a solution to the untoward incident that had occurred on September 20. But instead of arriving at any solution, police arrested 11 members of the group under various sections and a case no. 442/2015 was registered and the arrested were sent to the judicial custody. The arrested included Premsukh Sethia, Sanjoy Shil, Rakesh Jain, Babul Sarkar, Bittu Ghose, Subrata Saha, Gobinda Ghose, Jayanta Singha, Biswajit Debnath, Ramendra Nath Biswas and Sabur Sarkar. All sections of the people of the area have severely condemned the arrest and demanded unconditional release of the arrested persons.
