10,54,271 to exercise franchise in Barpeta district

BARPETA, March 10 � Barpeta district administration all set to hold the ensuing Assembly poll and it will leave no stone unturned to make it free and fair.

This was informed by the district election officer cum deputy commissioner Phanidhar Kalita. A total of 10,54,271 voters will exercise their franchise to elect eight members of legislative assembly in the April 11 poll in the second phase of election in the State.

Out of 10,54,271 voters in the district the number of male voters is 5,57,335 and female is 4,96,936. Barpeta is the second largest district in the State in respect of number of Assembly constituencies and voters. It consists of two election districts namely Barpeta and Bajali. While in Barpeta subdivision there is 812648 electorates with 431618 male and 381030 females under six assembly constituencies in Bajali, there are 241623 voters, with 125717 male and 115906 female under two Assembly segments.

With 1132 in Barpeta subdivision and 344 in Bajali, there are 1476 polling stations in Barpeta district. Constituency-wise break up of polling stations are 40 Sorbhog (223), 43 Barpeta (206), 44 Jania (193), 45 Baghbar (153), 46 Sarukhetri (207), 47 Chenga (150), 41 Bhawanipur (167) and 42 Patacharkuchi (177).

For the convenience of smooth conduct of poll, the entire district has been divided into 160 sectors under 32 zones. A sector officer has been appointed in every sector and a Zonal officer will supervise three- four sectors. In addition to these there will be one constituency magistrate in each constituency.

The deputy commissioner also informed that political parties have been apprised of the model code of conduct and the directives of the Election Commission of India. He assured that any action violating the model code of conduct will be dealt with sternly and requested all concerned to bring it to the notice of the administration.
