SHILLONG, Sept 22 - Deputy Chief Minister, in-charge of Education, RC Laloo said the Government is trying to appoint more teachers in schools across the State, which have just a single teacher at the moment.
He said, replying to a Call Attention Motion, that the Government is putting in all efforts that all schools conform to the student-pupil ratio under the Right to Education Act. The Education Minister said that there are currently at least 101 schools, both Government and non-Government in the State, which have just one teacher. The Education Department has not been able to make fresh appointment of teachers due to fund constraints, and so we are trying to transfer school teachers to some of these schools having shortage of teaching staff, Laloo said.
He, however, informed the House that there has been strong resentment amongst teachers and also from the management of non-Government schools when they were informed of the transfer option. Nonetheless, the Government is trying out other options to overcome the shortfall in such schools.
Earlier, during the Question Hour, PWD Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar said that the construction of the Guwahati-Shillong National Highway would be completed soon as only minor works and construction of side drains are pending.
Dhar said the pending construction of the 5.27-km-long Umsning Bypass in Ri Bhoi district, which forms part of the National Highway, would be taken up immediately because only recently the State Government could acquire the land.
Dhar said the completion of the project got delayed because it is also linked with other line departments and district administrations.
Intervening during the Minister�s reply, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said that meetings were held at the Chief Secretary-level, when the issue involving two particular districts cropped up. The Chief Secretary�s meetings were very focused in solving these issues, Sangma added.
