100 children�s libraries to be opened in Assam

BONGAIGAON, July 14 � The All Assam Students� Union (AASU) adviser Dr Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya on Friday inaugurated a children�s library at Swahid Bhawan, the district office of the student body, at Barpara locality of the town.

This would be the first children�s library in the State following which a minimum of 100 such libraries would be opened across the State in this current year, said Dr Bhattacharya who gifted to the library a book Dr Bhupen Hazarika, a legend.

In his address Bhattacharya said, �we have already initiated a revolution of reading books with the setting up of libraries in different places in the State�.

AASU president Sankar Prasad Ray said that Assam is lagging behind in education at the national level and the undivided Goalpara district is behind the mark in education at the State level.

�Without education we cannot forge ahead in this globalised age�, AASU general secretary Tapan Kumar Gogoi said while stressing on cultivation of the book reading habit in his address. Gogoi also recalled SR Ranganathan, the father of library sciences, for his contribution and dedication in spreading the importance of library among the people of the country.

Dr Samujjal Bhattacharya added that book banks would be opened in the districts for lending books to the needy students who face hurdles in pursuing their studies due to lack of text books.

�The initiative of opening of book banks would begin from Koliabor and the children�s book library has already been started at Bongaigaon�, Dr Bhattacharya said.
