TURA, Jan 22 - The North Garo Hills Vigilance Forum (NGHVF) has ensured the surrender of another ten members of the Achik Matgrik Elite Force (AMEF) today in Samgrak village in North Garo Hills in the presence of police officials, Garo Students Union Northern Zone members and villagers.
The surrender was brought about by the Forum after villagers from where the ten cadres belonged as well as their families sought its assistance in helping the militants to come overground.
Church elders as well as NGO members had sought the surrender of outfit members ever since the surrender of the outfit�s chairman and commander-in-chief in December last.
The surrender ceremony today was witnessed by more than 5,000 people. It was also attended by local MLA Cherak W Momin, DIG SS Kynjing, DC SC Sadhu, SP Raghavendra Kumar, besides members of the Forum and Church elders.
The cadres surrendered one LMG, two AK pistols, one SBBL gun along with an assortment of ammunition, demand pads and mobile phones.
MLA Momin said, �the surrenders will give a chance for peace to return in Garo Hills. Everything can be solved through talks and it is our earnest appeal to all to take the opportunity to help in the peace process.�
�We have continued our efforts at ensuring that those who have lost their way are able to return to the mainstream. Today�s surrenders are a part of our efforts at bringing normalcy to the people of NGH and will hopefully bring forward more militants to the mainstream�, said Wilness Marak, a member of NGHVF.
Tengrak Marak, president of NGHVF said, �We are always open to people to come forward for talks and are willing to help those who want to come forward. He further appealed to GNLA to come forward for peace so that the region could progress.
�They are the biggest and most powerful outfit and they should make the effort to come forward for talks for the benefit of Garo Hills and its people�, he added.
