IMPHAL, April 15 - The powerful earthquake that struck Myanmar on Wednesday night was also felt very much in Manipur. It damaged several structures and left around 10 people, including women, injured in the border State, though there was no report about any loss of life, sources said.
Like other parts of the North East, residents of Imphal and its important towns rushed to their courtyards and streets when the tremor struck at around 7.26 pm.
Most of the families who reside in concrete buildings could not sleep properly as usual due to fear of aftershocks. They also worried over the strong wind accompanied by a drizzle which followed the earthquake. The strong wind continued to hit the State till Thursday night after witnessing a different cloud formation in the sky.
The individuals sustained injury when they ran out of their respective houses due to fear, while many houses, school buildings and markets were also damaged, sources said.
The tremor also damaged a number of structures across the State, mostly in Imphal area, Senapati and Chandel districts.
However, the State Disaster Management Authority is yet to come out with a final figure of the damaged buildings or structures.
