ITANAGAR, April 29 In a major breakthrough, a joint team of security forces has arrested six cadres of Arunachal Pradesh Depressed Peoples Front (APDPF) besides gunning down one cadre during a fierce gunbattle when the forces were carrying out a search operation in Deban area of Changlang district in Arunachal Pradesh, police said.

Security forces comprising of Assam Regiment and State Police from Diyun (Changlang) and Namsai district had been tracking the movement of the underground group since the last few weeks and accordingly, a cordon and search operation was launched at a hideout in Deban area under Miao police station on Sunday last.

On seeing the security personnel, the APDPF cadres started firing on them and in the course of retaliatory fire, one of the cadres got killed and later, six cadres were apprehended. A criminal case has been registered against the arrested cadres.

The little known outfit was formed by some misguided Chakma youths to carry out extortion, kidnapping, etc., in Diyun, Miao and Namsai areas. The group has approximately 10-12 cadres who have undergone armed training in Bangladesh last year.

The arrest of six cadres has rendered the outfit toothless and the people of the area shall breathe a sigh of relief with their arrest, according to police sources. Meanwhile, the role of some local mastermind is also being investigated by the police, the sources added.

In the meantime, a zonal security coordination meeting, convened by the Deputy Inspector General of Police (Eastern Range) Apur Bitin was held at Namsai today which discussed various underground activities and prevailing law and order scenario.

The meeting, attended by the SPs of seven districts of Eastern Arunachal Pradesh and also by the officers of Army, Assam Rifles, IRBn, SIB and CRPF , stressed on adequate deployment of security forces along the Arunachal-Assam, Nagaland-Myanmar boundary to put a check on the movement of anti-social elements.
