By Correspondent

GOALPARA, Oct 31 One person was killed and 15 others injured as police opened fire to disperse a group of violent protesters who were blocking the NH 37 and had set a bus on fire at Khoridhora bridge under Krishnai PS at around 11am today.

According to Superintendent of Police Nitul Gogoi, police tried to avert the confrontation by requesting the protesters to lift the road blockade. Following refusal to heed to the request, police resorted to lathicharge and later fired tear gas when the protesters started pelting stones at them before setting on fire the passenger bus stranded as a result of the blockade.

He added that Additional SP Rosie Kalita and nine other police personnel were injured during the stone-pelting.

The protest is a part of the ongoing civil disobedience movement called by non-Rabha organisations demanding exclusion of non-Rabha villages from the Rabha Hajong Autonomous Council areas.
