1 killed as monsoon hits Tripura

AGARTALA, June 13 - Over 14,000 people of 3,599 families were rendered homeless in Tripura during the past 24 hours as heavy monsoon hit the State, according to official sources.

The body of a 50-year old villager who was washed away by river Feni was recovered from Manu Bazar area in South Tripura�s Sabroom subdivision. The body was identified as Sanakar Tripura of Uttar Ramcherra area.

Although the rains have stopped since Wednesday morning, over 500 families were evacuated to six relief camps in West Tripura�s Sadar subdivision as their homes were submerged by the flood waters.

Water level in river Howrah, which passes through the capital town, is still flowing at critical level (10.13 metres), but got reduced at 12 pm, said Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Sadar Tapan Kumar Das.

Assam-Agartala national highway, considered lifeline of the State has been opened for vehicular movement after clearing debris late last night. The road remained cut off for several hours due to massive landslips at Atharamura hill on Tuesday morning.

According to latest report of State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), over 3,500 families are still in 89 relief camps as heavy downpour flooded their dwelling houses in some subdivisions.

Kumarghat and Panisagar in Unakoti district, Sabroom in South Tripura district, Amarpur in Gomati district and Telimaura in Khowai district are worst affected by the monsoon, said an official of SEOC today.

NDRF and TSR personnel are working in co-ordination with the respective district administrations to render all possible help to the flood affected families, he said adding that damage to agricultural crops will be extensive.

Chief Minister Biplab Deb on Wednesday morning departed from Agartala for inspecting flood relief work. He requested all citizens residing in low lying areas to move to safer places. �The government firmly stands with you in this hour of need. I am constantly reviewing the flood relief work�, said Deb, adding that administration have already set up 76 relief camps across Tripura where more than 13,000 people have taken shelter.

Meanwhile, operational activities of ONGC have been suspended in North Tripura�s Panisagar subdivision due to incessant rainfall since Monday night.
